Three dimensions of thinking.

Could the three dimensions be a useful metaphor for thinking? A proposal of three modes of thinking.

Three dimensions of thinking.

The name of this blog is Philosophy Cubed. It reflects a certain standard that this blog is supposed to hold, namely to produce and present at least one of three modes of thinking. The best case scenario for a published text is for it to be a product of all three modes of thinking.

In the three following essays I will present the these three modes or «dimensions» of thinking. I have nicknamed them «dimensions» as a metaphor of the three dimensions of physics. Hence, they are

  1. procedural or vertical thinking
  2. deep thinking
  3. lateral or horizontal thinking

These three dimensions of thinking are useful for the university student, as I believe they give a brief account of the main goal of a university bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degree. In short a bachelor’s degree teaches you to think within a certain procedure, a master’s degree teaches you to think deeply within that logic, and a PhD challenges you to think laterally in said depth and within said logic.

The first essay will be on procedural thinking, and will be published on the 21st of July, 2021.

The second essay will be on deep thinking, and will be published on the 25th of July, 2021.

The third and final essay will be on lateral thinking, and will be published on the 1st of August, 2021.

Time to think.
